Brandon Shannon, Ph.D.
Doctoral degree discipline: Environmental science (with minor in entomology)
Awarding institution: The Ohio State University (2025)
Current postdoctoral position: Postdoctoral fellow, Bee Center
Auburn University department: Entomology & Plant Pathology (College of Agriculture)
Postdoctoral faculty mentor: Dr. Geoffrey Williams
Research areas:
Dr. Brandon Shannon is a postdoctoral fellow at the Auburn University Bee Center investigating practical solutions for beekeepers to manage the mite pest, Varroa destructor, and exploring ways to improve beekeeper decision-making strategies. Brandon received his master’s and PhD degrees in environmental science with a minor in entomology from The Ohio State University, and his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Central Florida. His graduate work focused on the inert ingredients in pesticides - the risks that toxic compounds pose to bees in agricultural settings, as well as the benefits that bee-safe inert ingredients can provide for Varroa control.
Awards/accomplishments:
Dr. Shannon is a recipient of the American Association of Professional Apiculturists’ Exceptional Student Award (2025), the John T. Ambrose North Carolina State Beekeepers’ Association Student Award (2024), and the Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees Graduate Student Scholarship (2023). Brandon has authored 5 refereed publications and 2 extension publications, authored over 50 academic and extension presentations, and patented a new extended-release pesticide formulation to control Varroa.
